Don't smoke this weed!

As every homeowner knows, weeds are particularly nasty for a variety of reasons. I have concluded that their primary task for existence is to remind us of "the curse" of Genesis 3:18. They thrive precisely where you don't want them to. No matter how hard you work to get rid of them they always seem to come back with increasingly greater zeal. If you catch them early they are easy to remove. The longer you wait to remove them the deeper and more resistant their roots become. At this point if you are not careful in extracting the entire weed, the roots will snap, remain under ground and simply grow back in a short period of time. Some weeds also have a knack to attach themselves to neighboring plants and trees growing in the midst of them, eventually choking the life out of them while simultaneously destroying their beauty. Certain weeds also like to attract hundreds of small little flying insects that jump up all at once when the weed is disturbed making removal even more unpleasant.

This of course got me thinking how sin is almost exactly like this. It also creeps slowly into your life, changes your life, influences your life, and ultimately will severely impair and damage your life. Re-read the paragraph above and replace the word "weeds" with "sin". My own personal conviction was magnified after doing so. Romans 8:20 reminds us that the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. In our struggle against the "weeds" of life there is great hope in The Lord Jesus Christ.

So what then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Be mindful of the weeds but know that He that is in you is greater than he that is in the world.

James
