In
the news recently I heard about the murder trial of the Philadelphia
abortion doctor accused of killing babies in a clinic that mainly serves
low-income women. This left me wandering in thought. Those who are
pro-life certainly value the concept of choice. They however, make
preparations concerning pregnancy before conception, by choice. They
would argue that this is the morally responsible thing to
do. Those who claim to be pro-choice claim the right to make this
decision after conception regardless of the eventual fate of the fetus,
possibly terminating a life. They argue that the rights of the
individual trump those of the unborn fetus.
Here's the rub as I perceive it: How ever one chooses to define it, a
life has been created upon conception. This life should be defined as a
human being if only for the fact that it will not alter it's design in
the womb and become something else. It has a genetic code and was
designed to become a human being. Moreover it is unique in all creation
in that it possesses a soul and person hood from day one. I am certain
of this for at least two reasons. One, nobody can claim or prove the
exact moment of person hood other than from conception. Three, six, nine
months, which is it? Since nobody knows exactly, benefit of the doubt
has to be applied from a moral, physiological and logically consistent
standpoint. The second reason concerning our soul comes from the pages
of the most read book on the planet. Jeremiah 1:4-5 says: Now the word
of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew
you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a
prophet to the nations.” This is one among many passages where The Lord
assures us that our soul is created at conception and person hood begins
in the womb.
Personal morality is one thing, government intrusion is another. Those
who choose to live by a moral code of ethics are forced to walk the thin
line between personal conviction and the laws of the country they live
in. We can do little to change that individually. However, we have every
capability to change the hearts and minds of those within our sphere of
influence. For the love of God is the most powerful force in the
universe. To Him, all life is precious, especially life created in His
own image.
And that's all I have to say about that!
